About the City
The most populous city in Southern England, Bristol has everything you could want in a University town, from historic architecture to its plethora of shops, cafés, bars, pubs and night clubs. Built around the river Avon, the city is incredibly picturesque. One of its most prominent architectural features is the Suspension Bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1864.
As well as stunning architecture and surrounding landscape, Bristol is an increbibly vibrant city. All the biggest retail chains can be found onthe High Street and in shopping centres such as Broadmead, The Galleries and Cabot Circus. However, unlike some UK cities, many independent boutiques thrive in Bristol, with a wide variety of vintage shops and chic cafés. Its stunning selection of restaurants includes Raymond Blanc’s
Brasserie Blanc
. While the student body is very important to the city of Bristol, it is very much athriving place in its own right, offering plenty of opportunities to escape the university bubble.
Bristol is also famous as the birthplace of my sterious grafitti artist Banksy, a satirical street artist who exhibits his dark sense of humour through stenciling on large public physical surfaces.
Studying at Bristol
At Bristol you can study an amazing range of subjects from faculties including Arts, Engineering, Science, Medicine, Veterinary Sciences, Dentistry, Social Sciences and Law. A range of degrees are available from bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as junior doctorates and higher doctorates. The university is pretty selective, with anaverage of 6.4 (Sciences faculty) to 13.1 (Medicine & Dentistry Faculty)applicants for each undergraduate place. The University has several historic and modern libraries, including the Wills Memorial Building which contains the Law and Earth Sciences libraries.
All students are assigned an Academic Personal Tutor,a named academic in their subject area who they can turn to for help and advice on anything whether it’s an academic or a personal issue. Lectures usually take place at your subject faculty building.
Accommodation
Students tend to live in the central area of the University and in two areas of Bristol: Clifton and Stoke Bishop. In first year students generally live in Halls of residence, which range from more modern buildings such as Badock Hall to older buildings such as Wills Hall, which features a stunning quad (see above). Hall prices range from about £100 to £160, so how much you want to be spending is something to consider when choosing which halls to apply for. You will also want to think about what you want in terms of location, size, facilities, and whether you would like a catered or self-catered hall. In their second and third years, students tend to live in houses in Clifton Village,Redland, or Stoke Bishop.
